The Korean-speaking Outreach Specialist at Hamkae Center will reach out and enroll community members, especially Korean American and other Asian Americans, into specific public benefits programs with the Organizing Team. They are passionate about equity and making sure that impacted community members have access to the resources that they need. Our ideal candidate can also listen to and connect community member issues not only to specific public benefits programs, but also Hamkae Center’s services and organizing work. Outreach includes- but is not limited to- phone calls, being physically present at community events, tabling at public spaces, and enrollment sessions. 

Responsibilities

Organizing (80%)

  • Be trained on specific public benefits programs
  • Conduct outreach to enroll individuals into these programs
  • Build relationships with community members through regular 1-on-1s
  • Listen to, identify, and document the issues that impact community members
  • Keep organized notes on enrollment and one-on-ones meetings with community members
  • Develop community resources in Korean as needed

Leadership (20%) 

  • Actively participate in weekly staff meetings, Organizing team meetings, and other relevant internal meetings
  • Participate in year-round organizing, civic engagement, and fundraising campaigns with rest of Hamkae Center team
  • Carefully track time and communications to ensure appropriate assignment
  • Other duties as assigned

Key Skills & Qualifications

  • Mission Alignment: Committed to social, racial, and economic justice. Believes in social justice and that Asian Americans in Virginia have the power to make systemic changes that benefit our collective future 
  • Bilingual in English and Korean (spoken). Plus, if you can read/write Korean fluently
  • Strong verbal communication skills
  • Experience building relationships with people from diverse backgrounds and experiences
  • Open to learning and trying new experiences
  • Ability to work well with others
  • Self-motivated, can set priorities, and able to develop and move projects forward
  • Create, track and meet deadlines, as well as workplans and own work schedule
  • Willing to work some weekends and evenings
  • Basic computer skills / not afraid to use technology (Microsoft Teams, Google Workspace, Zoom, etc)
  • Driver’s license and access to car

Additional Details

Location: Northern Virginia (must be able to travel to and work from either the Annandale or Centreville office when required)
Job Type: part-time (15 hours/week)
Reports to:  Organizing Team Lead
Pay + Benefits: $20/hour (commensurate w/ experience). Part-time staff are eligible for some paid time off (such as vacation and sick leave). We close the first week of July and December 25 – January 1 for reflection and rejuvenation.
Duration: This position is funded through the end of February 2024. We will extend the duration if resources allow for it.
